In the Water Margin
Wang Dingliu keeps a small tavern with his father on the Yangtze bank near Jiankang. He loves spear and staff and runs so fast that he is called Living Lightning. When Zhang Shun crosses the river to fetch the physician An Daoquan for Song Jiang, the ferryman Zhang Wang robs him, ties him up and throws him overboard. Zhang Shun gnaws free, swims ashore and staggers into the Wangs' tavern.
Father and son dry his clothes, feed him and tell him the robber's name. On the way back with An Daoquan, Zhang Shun boards Zhang Wang's boat again, binds him and drops him into the river. Wang Dingliu and his father leave their tavern to follow Zhang Shun to Liangshan, where he takes seat one hundred and four beneath the Dilie star.
