In the Water Margin
Shan Tinggui is a garrison commander of Lingzhou who has mastered the art of using water against an enemy, which earns him the name General of Holy Water. After Guan Sheng goes over to Liangshan, the court orders him and his fellow commander Wei Dingguo to march on the stronghold, and Guan Sheng volunteers to meet them.
In the fighting before Lingzhou, Guan Sheng feigns a retreat, turns and strikes Shan Tinggui from his horse with the back of his blade. Captured and treated with courtesy, Shan Tinggui submits, then rides to persuade Wei Dingguo to do the same. He takes seat forty-four beneath the Diqi star. During the war against Fang La he and Wei Dingguo fall together into a pit trap at the gates of Shezhou and are killed.
